The Game of "First Base"
This is a game that as few as 3 people can play. Often, I
will pitch to one of my kids while another covers first base.
This game helps with hitting, throwing, fielding, and catching skills.
Up to 5 can play this game. One person bats, one pitches, and
one plays first base. If you have two more players, one plays
shortstop and the other plays outfield. A catcher is not used - throw
against a backstop or pitchback net. The play proceeds as follows:
- The pitcher pitches balls and the
batter tries to make hits. We do not keep track of balls, foul hits,
or strikes but you could if you wanted to.
- If the ball is hit, the batter runs
to first base the same way as in a regular baseball game.
- The players on the field try to get
the batter out the same way as in a regular baseball game by
catching the ball before it hits the ground, tagging the batter, or
by making the force out play on first base.
- If the batter reaches first base
before getting tagged or forced out, the batter achieves a
successful hit.
- After getting a successful hit or
getting an out, the batter goes back and bats again.
- The batter is allowed 3 outs and
then the next player gets to bat.
- After all players have batted, the
one with the most successful hits wins.
- As in regular baseball, the runner
may not run off the baseline.
- The batter should wear a helmet.
Variations
- You may keep track of balls and
strikes. If the batter gets 3 strikes then an out is recorded.
- The parent/adult can also bat but
should deliberately hit grounders toward the fielders or pitcher.
- More than 5 can play this game by
placing extra players in the outfield.
