How To Build a Home Made Batting Tee

If it is off season and you need a batting tee, you may find it difficult to find one. Or perhaps, you want to some additional tees for practice but don't have a lot to spend. You can build your own very sturdy batting tee for around $15 with a few materials from the hardware store and some items laying around the house. Here's what you need:

  • 1" black drain hose from an old washing machine. Ask around or visit your local dump if you don't have any. Every time someone gets a new washing machine, they accumulate an extra hose.  I had 3 of them in my shed. The hose should have a 1 1/4" outer diameter.

  • One foot section of threaded pipe with a 1 1/4" outer diameter and a floor flange.

  • A five or six foot section of PVC pipe that has a 1 1/4" inner diameter. The threaded pipe and the drain hose will just barely fit inside this PVC pipe.

  • Two length of 7/8" hardwood dowel. This dowel must fit within the black drain hose.

  • An 18" by 18" piece of 3/4" thick plywood or other board as a base. This can be practically anything wood.

STEPS FOR BUILDING THIS TEE

1. Secure the flange and pipe to the center of the base as shown on the right.

2. Assemble three different size tees consisting of a PVC length, a rubber hose, and a dowel as shown below. Each tee will slide up and down on the PVC pipe. The PVC slides over the pipe and the wood dowel fits within the pipe. The wood dowel also keeps the rubber hose straight. Let the last 2-3" of the rubber hose extend past the dowel inside and have the rubber hose extend 2-3" inside the PVC pipe. Secure all 3 components with 1 or 2 screws.

3. Drill three or four holes in the steel pipe so you can adjust your batting tee up and down by placing a bolt in the hole to hold the batting tee in position. In the pictures on the right and below you will notice a bolt passing through the pipe to hold up the tee.
